RealTalk With Young Guru: Jay-Z’s Right Hand Man Speaks About Hip Hop, NY Rappers & Kingdom Come

Young Guru is a Rocafella, Engineer, A&R & Producer. The man has worked in the studio with Hip Hop’s biggest artist including of course, Jay-Z. I thought it would be interesting to see the opinions on Hip Hop from someone behind the scenes. I agree with a lot of things he says until he talks about the top 5 rappers. Let me know what you think about what he is saying, I consider it some REAL TALK.

I kinda agree with his top 5. I would have put nas and tupac in it though. The definition of a great emcee is some what that is great lyrically. Nas and pac and both great lyrically. Beats shouldn’t matter. But that is just how I feel. I agree this was some realtalk.

ATI wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 1:43 pm

Excellent interview, I agree with most of the points he was trying to make. Extra props for name-dropping Andre as well.

HipHopHead wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 1:45 pm

I agree with him saying that Tupac isn’t on the Top 5 because Tupac was a very influential and stood up for our communities but lyrically he had no punchlines, and none of his rhymes were witty, and he came off with nice flow some of the time. And if B.I.G. recorded as much as Pac did. B.I.G. would of sold like 100 million albums 2 date. Real Talk

Man mothafuck that nigga! New York Hip Hop is too violent, that’s why they fight in freestyles. Them niggas need to smoke some weed drink some lean (syrup, codeine) and get some bitches.

He’s real, but his mind is not open. He already has preconceived notions about what southern hip hop is. Southern hip hop is feel good music. If you just got rid of that pack, if you got a bad bitch, nice ride shit like that. If a up north cat really killed as many people as he did in the verse he’d be a fucking death row inmate.

Top 5
Pac
Biggie
Nas
Jada
Jay Z

Thats some REAL muthafuckin talk for that ass… props

1)2Pac
2)Andre 3000
3)Nas
4)Jay Z
5)Mos Def

14.
KingFono (All Time Greatest Hater!) wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:04 pm

It’s musical, but you can make a beat from nothing. A strong MC is hip hop music.

Really everyone’s Top 10 is gonna be different. Check your ages.

I’m 27 and I don’t like Rakim or KRS-One. I think that they were boring. Jigga is good, but NAS is the truth. Yeah, gimme that old 50 (pre Massacre)

15.
Hova wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:07 pm

dude speaks the truth

gives good interviews

interesting what he said about kingdom come

if that was rushed, got dayum…wait till the next hov album drops cuz i loved kingdom come

who cares what his top 5 is….thats his opinion, none of our top 5’s will match up

16.
Sam F. CT wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:13 pm

He made a real good point through a lot of babble. He basically said that because record sales are down due to the internet.. people (mainly East Coast Rappers that have the ability to) should start making real music again, because the industry is down regardless.

17.
D wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Realtalk all the way ,made respect to young Guru I think dude spoke the truth a 100 percent. Everyones top five is different but he was on the money with his view of Hiphop.

18.
[punk royal] wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

Inori, you’re a dick rider.

I’ve never heard or read anyone put Andre 3000 in their Top 5, of ANYTHING. IMO anyone who puts him (Andre) in their top 5 now, is just sucking the next mans opinion.

19.
Cash wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:30 pm

yeah…real knowledge right there….but shit…with the top 5…it don’t matta who says it and their justification for it….trying to get a set top 5 rappers is like Yao Ming stuntin in a Mini cooper…it just aint happenin…

20.
[punk royal] wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:31 pm

And that Jada over Jay-Z post made me Laugh so hard my side started to hurt.

21.
Bigshard wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Snoop Doesnt’ even write all of his material, so you have to be joking right. Just check his last album, D.O.C wrote a few song on that album. Snoop’s a no go

22.
T Baby wrote on June 26th, 2007 at 3:06 pm

i agree wit everything he says man.

i cant really compare our top 5s cause he is defintly older so he has rappers from his generation in his top.

even though, ive heard and understand how influential and how much krs and rakim used to rock, i couldnt put them in my top because they didnt have an affect on me.
but biggie and jay def need to be in there.
he was right by not putting pac and nas in there, even though they are great.

i agree with him on andree 3000 too.

Honestly that was great interview…. Alot of his opinions are ny based. Like his top five. Me being from the south i have a totally different top5 cause i wasnt raised on ny rap (kool g rap, Krs.. etc.) but i do respect his points because they were insightful and thought out not some ole bullshit! like some rappers bring to the table.

my top 5: (my opinion)

1.Biggie
2. Andre 3stacks
3. Cee-lo Green (go buy Soul food Goodie mob, then come holla at me)
4. Bun-B (that ridin dirty bunb no bullshit)
5. Pac

now if u disagree, go make a song better then any of these guys and come holla at me.

i somewhat agree w/ his top 5 but id have nas in there and im torn between eminem or andre 3000, pac isnt in my top 5 jus cuz lyrically he was average, had no punchlines, or witty lines 4 that matter but he was influential thats why hes usually in everybody’s top 5 but not mine sorry

Can’t Believe nobody has mentioned Big L I rate him alot higher than Jay-Z. Not sure who make up my list but I would have Eminem,Nas,Big L,Joe Budden & Big Pun in their no particular order .The reason 2Pac & Biggie aint made the list is because I was 2 young to listen to these two greatest when they were alive. Honorable metion to Krs-One, Big Daddy Kane,Rakim,AZ & Scarface.

1. 2Pac - he touched on all bases; politics, real family relationships, partying, the after life, gang related issues & our struggles. you name it & this cat already wrote it.

2. Andre 3000 - he’s so far ahead of the hip-hop game you might as well put him 1st now before this is all said & done.

3. Mos Def - needs to lace up more tracks & he’d be running 2nd w/ 3 stacks. this cat is freakin’ supa-dope.

4. Nas - the boys got some deep thoughts. mix up your flows Nasir Jones & you might get more props.

5. Bigz - had the nicest flows but, was just a boaster on the roller coaster. still give ya a big up for trying.

6. Jay Z - “The Corruptor”! the biggest boaster of all-time & NEVER had one single deep track. Pretentious J-Hova. what a shame & a waste of flow skills.

7. Rakim - Dr. J of the hip-hop game.

8. Ice Cube - the heart & the coldest emcee of NWA.

9. Scarface - the best from the Dirty South. UGK will even admit to it.

10. Snoop - the dopest voice to touch the mic. so fresh & funkydelic.

HONORABLE MENTION: goes to GrandMaster Flash, Melle Mel, Talib Kweli, Common, LL Cool J, KRS-One, Chuck D., Eminem; if this white boy had NEVER dogged on his Mom & his gal Kim in his songs he would’ve gotten way much more props, respect & a higher ranking. NOW, imagine if it was an African rapper who was talking crazy about killing his gal & having that much hate towards his Mom like Em had spitted in his rhymes.. they; police officers would’ve taken that African rapper to jail eventually!!! you noticed they just left M&M alone.) just like what Pac said “white man’s world”.

He’s not working with Jay for nothin..He didnt go on tour with big names on tour for nothing.. Open ya mind and hear what hes speaking, he’s a smart dude!!
